Presenter: Dr Cheri Marcham PhD,  CIH, CSP, CHMM, FAIHA – Chair of ACGIH Bioaerosols Committee

This presentation will explore the potential health and safety concerns from electronic cigarette use, emissions and deposition, as well as the current regulatory status and ventilation guidelines available to health and safety professionals.  Having this scientific information will help OSH professionals understand the potential risks of electronic cigarette use in the workplace or other venues, and establish and justify controls to limit potential exposures to non-users and the general public, including the potential need for cleaning regimens and ventilation and isolation recommendations when e-cigs are used or otherwise allowed inside buildings.

The Value of Certification:  One of the most critical elements to effective safety and health practice in the workplace is having competent safety and health professionals and practitioners. But what is “competency” in the safety and health profession, and how is it measured? This presentation will explore the value of professional certification in advancing both the individual safety and health professional, and the profession as a whole, and why certification by an accredited certification body is the ultimate sign of professionalism. This presentation will present information on the various levels and types of several safety and health certifications, as well as the benefits of attaining and encouraging other to attain certification from an accredited organization.  It will also address the process by which certification exams are developed and maintained to provide a full appreciation of the value of accredited certifications, and to better understand what to expect from the certification process.

Presenter’s Bio:  Dr Cheri Marcham is an Assistant Professor at Embry-Riddle. Dr Marcham earned her PhD at the University of Oklahoma and has the CIH, CSP and CHMM certifications. She has been honored by AIHA as a Fellow. Her research in the area of electronic cigarettes in the indoor air environment lead to the AIHA white paper on the subject. Dr. Marcham also serves as the chair of the ACGIH Bioaerosols committee.
